What are the Most Common Imaging Tests Used to Diagnose Arthritis?

To provide an accurate diagnosis of arthritis, we utilize several imaging modalities that allow us to visualize the internal structures of your joints. Each test offers unique insights into the condition of your bones and soft tissues.

The most common imaging tests used to diagnose arthritis include:

  • X-Ray: This is typically the first-line imaging test used for joint pain. It is excellent for capturing bone structure, identifying joint space narrowing, and detecting bone spurs (osteophytes) or erosions associated with osteoarthritis.
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): We use MRI to obtain highly detailed images of soft tissues, including cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and the joint lining (synovium). It is particularly effective for detecting early signs of inflammation and bone marrow edema that may not be visible on an X-ray.
  • Ultrasound: This radiation-free, real-time imaging tool is ideal for assessing peripheral joint inflammation. It allows our radiologists to detect synovial thickening and fluid collections (effusions) while the joint is in motion.
  • CT Scan: We reserve CT scans for cases requiring high-resolution, 3D reconstructions of bony anatomy. It provides superior detail for complex fractures or preoperative planning that other modalities might miss.

At our facilities in Arizona and Texas, we offer these advanced diagnostic tools with 24 – 48 Hour Report Turnaround times. Please note that results may vary based on individual patient conditions, and you should consult with a healthcare professional for specific diagnosis and treatment advice.
